Aeolian Islands
ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND EXTREMELY DIVERSE, THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS ARE A PIECE OF PARADISE TO CRUISE BY YACHT
The Aeolian Islands volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea consists of seven main islands, several islets and giant boulders lying in shape of a Y.
The main islands are Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli and are completed by the following islets, Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca.
Astonishingly beautiful and extremely diverse, the Aeolian Islands are also known as the Lipari Islands as Lipari is the largest in the archipelago.
Lipari was settled in the 4th millennium BC by a Neolithic culture originating from Sicily and Calabria and later on by the Greeks and the Romans. The Lipari Archaeological Museum holds remains from the Neolithic age, the bronze age, the Greek and the Roman period. It recently opened a section dedicated to underwater archaeology and vulcanology.
History apart, Lipari has a charming harbour town, a beautiful rocky coastline, beaches and clear blue-green waters.
If your charter started in the Amalfi Coast, Stromboli will be your first stopover.
Stromboli in the North and Vulcano in the South are two active volcanic islands.
A moonlight dinner anchored off Stromboli is a unique experience !
In Vulcano instead, a mud bath in laghetto dei fanghi is both fun and relaxing.
South of Stromboli is the most exclusive and upscale of the Lipari islands: Panarea.
This car-free tiny island is a real gem.
Pretty, well-kept, simple, chic and sophisticated, it attracts VIPs and celebrities and has an active nightlife.
North West of Lipari, lies peaceful Salina the second largest and the highest Aeolian island.
Salina is also the greenest with olive groves, Malvasia vineyards, caper bushes, fig and citrus trees all fed by natural freshwater springs.
Salina was chosen by British director Michael Radford to shoot part of his movie « Il postino » (the postman).
Did you know that the island is said to have the best Granita (Sicilian lemon sorbet) in the whole archipelago? Make sure to go Malvasia wine tasting and try one of the hidden Michelin star restaurants of the island before you head off to Alicudi and Filicudi.
Alicudi and Filicudi are the most western islands of the archipelago and the least touched by man, a silent retreat to regenerate your body and soul before departing for Palermo, the vibrant capital of Sicily with an international airport.
